Do timber carports require a foundation or concrete base?

Yes, a solid foundation is essential for the structural integrity of a timber carport , we can provide base plans and recommend professional contractors to complete the groundwork or our own groundworks team may cover your area. Your carport will either require a full concrete base or concrete pads under each of the support posts.

  • Framing: EX 4” x 2” (100mm x 50mm) pressure-treated timber framing.
  • Cladding: Pressure-treated shiplap exterior cladding.
  • Roofing: Options include black Onduline, Onduvilla (available in shaded red, shaded brown & black), cedar shingles, Tapco synthetic slate, or traditional tiles.
  • Additional Features: Staddle stones under each support post, OSB roof boarding, and galvanised fittings and guttering.

Do I need planning permission for a timber carport?

In many cases, timber carports fall under permitted development rights and do not require planning permission. However, certain conditions must be met:

  • The carport must be single-storey.
  • Eaves height should not exceed 2.5 metres.
  • The overall height must not exceed 4 metres for a pitched roof or 3 metres for any other type of roof.
  • If within 2 metres of the property boundary, the maximum height is 2.5 metres.
  • The structure should not be built in front of the principal elevation of the house.
  • The floor area should not exceed 30 square metres.
  • The total area of ground covered by outbuildings should not exceed 50% of the total area of the property.

We recommend consulting your local planning authority or a planning consultant to confirm your specific situation.

Is delivery and installation included?

Installation is always included, unless you choose a DIY option. Delivery is free within much of the South East and Home Counties such as Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Surrey and Sussex and whilst we deliver and install nationwide, we calculate the delivery cost based upon your location. We would be happy to let you know how much delivery is, just get in touch.
